Bob Matz is a North Dakota based artist who considers himself to be a prairie realist painter. His paintings can be seen as a diary or journal of his personal experience. At times his work may be topical dealing with issues of the day. Matz’s artwork reflects feelings about culture, humor and history of the prairie.
He is concerned with the idea of treating the whole painting as an art object. For Matz, each component of the painting is an intrinsic element for interpretation. The image with its border and the uniquely finished frame combine to produce the total artistic expression. Through layers of color and texture, his paintings capture moments in time. His work exhibits a meld of meticulousness and looseness reminiscent of prairie wind blowing across manicured landscapes.
Born in North Dakota, Robert Matz studied at the University of North Dakota where he received his BS in art education and an MFA in painting and drawing. He launched his career as an art educator in 1978 when he was placed in Bismarck as the first visual artist in residence with Arts in the Schools Program through the North Dakota Council on the Arts.
