Kerry Grombacher Event

Songwriter Kerry Grombacher
Concert & Creative Writing Workshop
Saturday, Oct 13th
2:00 pm – Creative Writing Workshop
7:00 pm – Country Western Concert
at The Arts Center in Jamestown

Western balladeer Kerry Grombacher will appear in concert, and lead a creative writing workshop, at the Jamestown Arts Center on Saturday, October 13. Kerry writes contemporary western songs and plays guitar and mandolin. In the spirit of the troubadours of old, his songs paint vivid portraits and tell the fascinating stories of working cowboys and old camp cooks, roadside motels and prisons, wildland firefighters, cattle rustlers and wolf trappers—stories of the west that he’s lived and worked in.

In May and June of 2010, Kerry Grombacher followed the path of U.S. Highway 281 from Dunseith, and the International Peace Garden, to Brownsville, Texas, on his 1,872 mile long “Highway 281 Troubadour Tour,” and he appeared at the Jamestown Arts Center in the inaugural concert on the tour.

“I’m so pleased to return to the Jamestown Arts Center for a concert and a writing workshop,” Kerry said recently, “and I’m happy to return to Highway 281. It’s a long and scenic road, the kind that inspires me, and we’ll talk about that during the writing workshop, “Finding the Story in the Picture.”

Kerry Grombacher has performed from coast to coast and border to border at events as varied as Cowboy Songs & Range Ballads at the Buffalo Bill Historical Center in Cody WY and the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. He’s tied a guitar on a packhorse and sung for riders deep in the back country of Yellowstone National Park, and he’s entertained travelers on the parking lot of the Sands Motel on old Route 66 in Grants NM (where the owner put his name on the door of Room 104). He’s fought forest fires in Oregon and done day work on ranches in New Mexico, Colorado, and California; he’s done archaeological fieldwork in New Mexico and he was the staff historian for the Texas Archaeological Survey; and he’s led songwriting workshops for libraries, schools and colleges.

The Arts Center is located at 115 2nd St. SW in Jamestown. The creative writing workshop, “Finding the Story in the Picture,” is scheduled at 2 p.m., and admission for the workshop is $5.00. The concert will begin at 7:00 and tickets are $15.00 ($10.00 for Arts Center members). For information call 701-251-2496.

Finding the Story in the Picture:
Creative Writing Workshop

“There is a part of everything which is unexplored, because we are accustomed to using our eyes only in association with the memory of what people before us have thought of the thing we are looking at. Even the smallest thing has something in it which is unknown…” Gustav Flaubert

Are you a writer, or a teacher or student – of poetry, songs, fiction or non-fiction – who wants to sharpen your ability to describe scenes and to tell stories? Kerry Grombacher, a songwriter and music educator based in New Orleans, offers a workshop, “Finding the Story in the Picture,” that will help you find inspiration for a broad range of creative writing and learn to be a better observer and a more expressive writer.

Kerry Grombacher is a noted songwriter who presents workshops on creativity and songwriting at music festivals, museums and schools. His work has been covered by recording artists including Chris Chandler, Gary Prescott, Trails & Rails, Ed Stabler, Lorrie Keating, Duke Davis, The Texas Trailhands, and Earl Gleason. Grombacher is a “first reader” for several published novelists, short story writers and authors of non-fiction, and the Texas Institute of Letters chose him as a judge for its 2008 literary awards.

Students in the workshop will learn to use photos, paintings, the landscape itself, and stories from literature and history to hone their own descriptive and story telling skills by asking (and answering): what do we see; what do we know; and what do we imagine? Grombacher stresses the use of strong descriptive language, literary and cultural allusions, and the power of story. Time will be spent in group discussions, writing exercises and focused writing sessions.
